Tattoo Aftercare Advice
Caring for your tattoo is essential to ensure proper healing and maintain the quality of your ink. Follow these guidelines for the aftercare method recommended by your artist: wet wrapping with cling film or using second skin.
Wet Wrapping with Cling Film
-
Initial Wrap:
-
Your tattoo will be wrapped in cling film after completion. Leave this on for 2-4 hours to protect the fresh tattoo from bacteria and dirt.
-
-
Cleaning Your Tattoo:
-
Remove the cling film carefully and wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap.
-
Gently pat dry with a clean, lint-free paper towel. Avoid rubbing.
-
-
Reapplying Cling Film (First 3 Days):
-
Rewrap your tattoo with fresh cling film every 4-6 hours for the first 2-3 days, especially if your tattoo is exposed to dirt or friction.
-
Before each rewrap, clean your tattoo as instructed above.
-
-
Moisturizing:
-
After the third day, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, tattoo-friendly moisturizer (like Hustle Butter or Bepanthen) to keep the tattoo hydrated. Do not overapply, as this can suffocate the skin.
-
Stop wrapping your tattoo unless instructed otherwise by your artist.
-
-
General Tips:
-
Avoid soaking your tattoo in water (no baths, swimming pools, or hot tubs) for at least 2 weeks.
-
Avoid direct sunlight on your tattoo during the healing process.
-
Second Skin (Transparent Adhesive Film)
-
Initial Application:
-
Your tattoo will be covered with second skin immediately after completion. Leave this on for 24-48 hours as instructed by your artist. It’s normal to see fluid build-up under the film—this is part of the healing process.
-
-
Removing the Second Skin:
-
Gently peel off the second skin under warm running water. Pull back slowly, not upward, to avoid irritation.
-
Wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap.
-
Gently pat dry with a clean, lint-free paper towel.
-
-
Reapplying Second Skin (Optional):
-
If advised by your artist, you can apply a fresh piece of second skin for an additional 3-5 days. Ensure the tattoo and surrounding skin are completely dry before application.
-
-
After Removing Second Skin Permanently:
-
Begin applying a thin layer of fragrance-free, tattoo-friendly moisturizer 2-3 times daily to keep the tattoo hydrated.
-
Avoid excessive washing or scrubbing of the tattooed area.
-
-
General Tips:
-
Avoid soaking your tattoo in water (no baths, swimming pools, or hot tubs) for at least 2 weeks.
-
Avoid direct sunlight on your tattoo during the healing process.
-
What to Avoid for Both Methods:
-
Do not scratch, pick, or peel scabs or flaky skin—this can cause scarring or loss of pigment.
-
Avoid tight clothing that may rub against your tattoo.
-
Do not use petroleum-based products unless specifically recommended by your artist.
-
Avoid excessive sweating and gym workouts that may expose your tattoo to bacteria for the first few days.
Healing Timeline:
-
Days 1-3: The tattoo may feel tender, swollen, and may weep fluid.
-
Days 4-10: Scabbing and peeling begin. Keep the area moisturized but do not pick at the skin.
-
Days 10-30: The tattoo will appear slightly dull as the deeper layers heal. Continue moisturizing.
